Greetings Corvette commrades,
Has anyone installed a rear end drain plug? I have an 88 and I want to be able to drain the rear end and not siphon it. I know Corvette Central has kits but I can drill, tap and install my own. I just need to know the right location to install the plug.
Thanks guys.
Hey Ciscokid, I think that you're not the only one who would like to do that without buying a "kit". If someone that bought the kit and could scan the template and post it then we could drill and tap to our hearts content. Sure would make life alot easier(at least that part of life). Thanks in advance, Robert :yesnod: :yesnod:
Yeah! That is what we need. That template. I am wondering if the plug has to be installed in exactly a precise location or what. I really don't want to put out $50.00 for that template. Of course they give you all the tools and materials but still. I have all the tools. Just need the location.
Thanks for your reply rspvette. :smash:

Re: Rear end drain plug install (ciscokid)
Corvette CLinic in Sanford Florida also sells a kit. I'll bet Corvette Central buys from them and marks it up. I have a picture of the installed plug in my new book from Richard Newton. I can't scan it but I could make a copy and mail it to you tomorrow. Give me your home address corvetteronw@hotmail.com Richard also says you need a special tool to get at the fill plug (it is very close to the floor panel). Most shops use vise grips, but this can tear the plug up. Gordon Killebrew suggests refilling with 2 bottles of GM limited slip and then Mobil1 synthetic gear oil. :)
I just installed one in my '95 after having it on a shelf for about a year. Had the transmission out so I figured it would be good to do.
Yep, the template is needed, 2 locations, 1 for the manual (44) and the other for the auto (36) also you need to watch the angle of the drill so you miss the cover bolt.
But other than that it's just a drill, tap, and pipe plug.
I'd like to help, but don't have anyway to send pics.
Pete
Ciscokid, if you can scan the template once you get it and post or email it to me I would be beholden to ya. Let me know if that will work. Thanks, Robert
