Default Oil Pan Stud Location

In my on-going episode to correct my oil pan leak I am puzzled why there is only one stud on the front side of the pan. The other side is a bolt. I looked it up on the micro-fiche and sure enough it only shows one stud, but on the opposite side to mine.

Can anyone who has changed their pan gasket tell me which side this stud is on, and when you remove the nut does the stud come with it? Isn't the stud supposed to stay in the block if for nothing else but to help with location?

As always thanks for any help.

Pete

On my '96, the studs are on the rear seal housing and I believe there were two studs on mine. Since you are only doing gasket, you will not need to remove the housing.

Yes, the stud is supposed to stay in. I think it goes on the drivers side, I'll look at mine this evening and let you know for sure.

Shoot, I guess mine came out when I took it apart too. But I'm still 90% sure it goes on the left. Anyone?

the 2 studs with nuts are in the back two pan holes. up front they're both bolts, but one has a stud on its head. i think this is to hold coolant line brackets in place on some LTx engines (impalas or firebirds?) that have the oil/coolant heat exchangers.

I used a Canton oil pan stud kit, so all of them have studs now.

Hey...Ram that looks like a very good idea. Who handles that stud kit? Looks like I'll be doing a little more work with the oil pan.
Thanks guys for the explanations on the front bolt/stud.
CF rocks!

My pan stud came off like a bolt. I re-installed it on the passenger side front. I am not sure if that was correct. Let me know what you find and if I need to change mine around. It didn't look like it mattered to me. :troll

Just for your info, my 92 service manual shows a total of 2 studs used. One on either side of the most rear part of the oil pan. :chevy
