What are the chances I will get gear noise when I swap out my stock Auto gear for a 3.75? I have a 93 Auto (Dana 36) and I have heard horror stories from a few guys. How do I select a good gear shop? Are they going to tell me that is the way it is and I need to live with it? Or, should I expect gear whine and just get load pipes? Comments??? I want to change my 2.?? gear for a hard pulling 3.75 Richmond gear. :skep:

Re: Gear Noise chances? (RUBYREDVETTECARD)
well i did my 3.75's, have done many a gear before (at least 10 in my old f-body). Pinion depth was right, backlash was good, and had a good pattern. BUt these are the noisiest damn gears i have ever seen (Richmond). i mean with stock exhaust it was loud. HAven't got my 383 running yet so not sure there but its just temporary till it breaks and i can get a D44
I believe I bought them from Reider racing. They were compareable in price to Richmond. They survived 3 blow ups at track. I would not be afraid to use them again.
Make sure that whoever sets up the gears owns a pinion depth checker. Setting pinion depth " by eye" is as wrong as setting timing by ear. If you were 1000 miles closer I would offer to set up gears. You should find someone local. Most machine shops are very capable. Pinion depth , backlash and pinion preload are the three things that need to be dead nuts accurate.. If all three are right then gear noise will be minimal and long life will follow
Pete, thanks for all the info. I hope I can get the gears installed without the whine. I was told once they start, they don't stop whinning. My wife would think I am an idiot for changing my quiet gears for a whiny set. Let aalone, the $$ it would cost to screw them up. :lolg:
When I had my D36-3.54 rebuilt I sent it to Zip, (supporting vender) and they did an excellent job. This was the only diff. I have ever had rebuilt that was quiet like the factory setup. They do a group purchase all the time on these. Since then I have switched to a D-44 with 4.09 gears (purchased it already setup used) and Im getting ready to pull it out and have it checked. Man it makes a noise if on the gas or off the gas. At cruise its quiet.
DRM offers a variety of final drive ratios for the Corvette and Camaro. A ratio change will effect the way your vehicle performs in every gear, whether you have an automatic or manual transmission. So for maximized performance, ask us which ratio suits your needs.
3.73 Ratio Corvette 60-300 $495
4.09 Ratio Corvette 60-311 $545
3.42 Ratio C5 Automatic Corvette 60-314 $1295
3.73 Ratio Camaro 60-312 $326
4.10 Ratio Camaro 60-313 $326
NOTE: Due to manufacturer tolerances, certain housings will always have some gear noise when fitted with high ratio gears.
Ring and pinion installation for the aluminum housing found in Corvettes requires a very precise and specific set up or gear whine will occur. DRM has the experience to offer this service.
I just had some Tom's Diff 4.11s installed and they are noisy. I don't trust that the shop did it did them perfectly. The whine is loud but so is the rest of the car. It's a long way from being the quite cruiser it once was. I even switched out fluid to see if it would make a difference. If I had to do it over again (which I might have to), I would remove the batwing myself and take it to a quality machine shop.
