Well I got some 285/40/17 gs-d3's a little over a month ago for the rear, and I'm buying new tires for the front tomorrow morning. my wheels are 17x9's all around, and to save money & tread & be able to rotate tires, I figure I'll go with another pair of 285's up front.
Just wanted to make sure that the 285/40/17 tire fits up front on a stock '95 vette without any problems (rubbing, scraping, ect.)?? Thanks.
I have been running 285/40/17's on front for over 2 yrs. No problem. I have even heard of 315/35/17's being used on the front of some C4's, but I don't know how that would affect turning.
If your wheels are stock Z07, they are 9.5" wide all around. 285's are safe. I wouldn't put 315's on a 9.5" rim. Just make sure you don't have the 8.5" front wheels (standard suspension), this will be pushing it for 285's.
so I'll be running 17x9's w/ 285's all on 4 corners. How does it look? do the fronts stick out further than the rears
I just did this with new Y2K replica wheels (53mm offset vs 56 stock) and it looks fine. The fronts do stick out of the wells ever so slightly. I've been meaning to post before & after pics since there was some discussion going on a few weeks ago.
Why would you do this anyway? Spend more money?
because I was going to go with 275's up front, then figured why not go with the 285's so I can be able to rotate them. not to mention I'm sure there will slight improvements with the car's handling, going from 255front/285rear combo to a 285/285
275's or 285's on all 4 corners is a good way to go .... be sure you have 9.5 wheels on all 4 corners also. I'm using 275's on all 4 corners on my 94 LT1 and the handling is really outstanding (big improvement over the 255s front & 285s rear).
285 x4 for me. works good.
check your front wheel size. if you had 255 and a base suspension '95 then you probably have 8.5" wide rims which are most likely too narrow for 285 tires.
OK, I now have 285's on all corners. I got them put on a few hours ago.
the 255's I have were on the original front wheels, then I bought my ZR-1's, and used the original tires. Now I've got new fronts & backs, 285 GS-D3's :D
I'm very happy w/ them on the front. They look good, they got rid of my vibration problems, the car rides smoother, and the car handles better.
Running 285"s on all four corners for two plus years. No rubs or problems yet. If West Virginia roads give me no problems, I can safely say you can drive it about anywhere with 285"s. These are Michelin Pilots on a 94LT1. :iagree:

IMHO: I moved to the 255/45 on the fronts and believe it has drastically increased overall handling. Steering is now more accurate, a bit lighter, and I find that at 8/10ths driving it is now more benign- that is, more balanced/neutral with less understeer. I found that with 275s on the front (always had the 285/40s on the rear) that there wasn't any noticeable increase in overall grip, but the overall tendency was to understeer unless I rotated the car with the throttle.
YMMV, and I haven't taken her out x-crossing yet. :auto:
