Took my '86 in to get the carpet put in and weatherstripping on. Started to put the interior back together, and noticed a problem. The interior lights do not work on delay or when the door is open. The hatch release on neither door works, but the one in the console works. The lights above the door handles work when you push them, but not when door is open. The halo lights come when the hatch is open. I checked all fuses and looked at the wiring diagram, can't see anything obvious. Thought I'd quite for the day, have a beer, and ask for help. Don't really want to put everything together until I figure it out, may need to get to the wiring. Any and all help will be appreciated.

P.S. The door panels had to come off to do the weatherstripping, something in a panel?
The people that installed your carpet and weatherstripping unplugged a connector and didn't put it back. Take it to them and have them correct their mistake!
If the doors are left open too long it burns up the delay switch. It is located taped to the wiring above and behind the ECM on the right side of the car. This part is no longer made. Search the archives to find ways to fix or bypass this switch. I have tried to repair mine (85) but won't know the results till I get the engine back in. I used radio shack part #276-1778 that solders into the switch circut board. I"ll post the results when I get the car back together. Don't hold your breath :nonod:
That sounds like it. Had the doors open for quite a while when doing the door panels. Exactly what does that part look like? When you say behind the ECM, is that toward the back or front of the car? Will try to find a search of archives, but not sure how to do that. Thanks.
Rich: the switch is, per service manual, "behind RH side of IP (instrument panel) taped to IP harness". Mine is black in color, about two inches square and three quarters of an inch thick, it has a tab on one end with a hole in it for screw mounting. It was taped with masking tape. Came from the factory with that kind of high tech fastener! The high end Buick, Olds and Pontiac of the same year also used this switch. You might try wrecking yards.
The ECM on early C4 anyway, is under the carpeted panel on the passenger side. As soon as you get that panel off, you'll see a cadnium-plated box pushed up verticle into the dash with a bunch of wires going to it. That's the ECM. The two screws that hold it up in the dash are easy to get to and you should have no trouble finding what you are looking for once the ECM is down.
