!st Time Scanner 1985 L98
What is the best scanner software to use for a 1985 with the stock ECM using a IBM 600E with Win98 and does anyone have a clear detailed pic of the cable I am not good at reading Shematics ...Thanks Von

You will have ot use a 10K pull-down resister to get the ECM to start sending data.

Best, and easiest would be to buy the AKM Cable adapter and Datamaster. Now, keep in mind, this is probably overkill for the 85 datastream. But, it is very easy to setup and use.
Then there is cheapest: This link is to a very simple adapter you can build
from parts at your local radio shack.
The 2 transistor adapter
Here is the ALDL Connector, 10K resistor goes between A-B, data is on E.
probably the best free software for 85 would be FreeScan at http://www.andywhittaker.com/ecu/ecu_software.htm

Hey Vonstarr how did the cable make and first time use go? I have two 85's and was excited to see this possibilty on one of my old pentium 1 thinkpad laptops for tuning the cars. Is it worth the effort? How much did the cable pieces cost.

i have a friend making me the cable and have not gotten it back yet .but when i bought all the parts at radio shack i had to buy packs of 5 and ten so if it work OK i will see if i can get him to make me a couple of extras with the spare parts send me your address and i can send you one. I got a freebie on the headliner material from Jeff on this forum so time to pay it foward ...Von

When using the FreeScan software what type of cable is needed? Did I miss that on the website.

When I had the 85 ecm I used Winaldl. I couldn't get Freescan to work.

The cheapest option for the 85 probably WinALDL with your own cable. A more expensive alternative, but the best scan tool available for GM OBD1 vehicles is the Ease GM OBD1 scan tool. Not only will it work on your 85 Vette, it will also scan any other GM OBD1 vehicle you own. That includes Chevy/GMC Trucks, Pontiacs, Saturns, you name it. Ease works with Win 95, 98, 2000, XP, NT4.
