Since I'm a newer member I would like to say first of all that I would be lost without the information on this forum and that it is an amazing tool for shade trees like me who don't like to pay too much for service and like to be sure the job is done right. Anyway, I'm going to get new tires in the next week or so and need some info from people running either of these two Kumhos. I plan to use my car for 90% daily driving and 10% autocrossing. My question is are the MX's worth the extra $40/each over the Ecstas? I don't exactly baby the car around corners and would consider most of my driving "spirited" to quote Tire Rack. Also I'm assuming the MX's will wear out quicker, but am I wrong about that? I've heard nothing but good things about the Ecstas but don't know if I will be wishing I had the MX's which also have great reviews.
I guess being in Denver where we have drought more than rain, I'm more concerned with dry traction. I don't drive the car in the winter because I have a beater truck to use instead. Any info on tread life of either?

Re: MX vs. Ecsta tires (Toy90)
The MX (which is also in the Ecsta series) has a wear rating of 200. This means the tire is pretty soft offering good bite but obviously the trade off is shorter life. I have MXs and like them.
the Mx's are a better tire for all around traction .The 712 is great in rain .I had MX's last year and put about 30k on them changed to the 712 for winter.I will buy the mx's again next time im not real happy with th 712 the road noise is loud compared to the mx.I will not be buying the 712 again.
I dont know about the MXs, but I do know about the 712s. I dont care for them too much. They are great tires for the $ but not very good for autocross. The 712s have good grip but have unpredictable breakaway. And the breakaway point is somewhat weak. Ive heared the MXs are comparable to BFG KD tires. If that is true, they are the much, much better performance tire. If you have a second set of wheels, you might consider putting the MXs on the lighter stock wheels and the 712s on your A-molds or whatever you have to make you car have a better look. Before going to the track just change your wheels.
Side note: Ive become a fan of Falken tires. I think the 451 GRB tires are great. Much better than the 712s.
I use the MX's for daily driving.. stop and go 30min eacxh way to work everyday. I also had the tires on the car when I drove cross country and saw some high speeds in some of the deserted parts of the desert.. I felt they handled predicatbly and the road noise isn't excessive.. Currently them have minimal wear on them and I have logged about 8k miles on them since may of last year.. including alot of fun with the 383 LT1 stroker motor!
I would say the are one of the best tires I've ever purchased and the cost wasnt bad at all! :steering:
Found this over in Wheels and Tires. It's a statement by Luke@Tirerack. The member wanted pricing on both the MX and 712s:

I would seriously try to discourage your from getting the 712's ... they are really weak performers

Don't even bother with the 712's. They aren't even in the same league. Get the MX tires. I've tried many tires, and short of using race tires, they are the best street tire I have used for autocross. I've got about 5k miles and about 6 high speed autocrosses on them, and there is plenty of tread on them. I am sure I will get at least 15k-20k out of them. Rain has also been a non-issue with these tires. They handle it more than adequately. For the price and the level of grip these tires provide, you simply can not beat that.
