i heard elims actually hurt performance, due to loss of backpressure? is that true? I thought that the cat and the resonator provided enough back pressure
I love mine. It took about an hour to install myself.
I run a 13.5 with a 2.3 60' with them. I can't see losing any power from it, I dynoed at 307 rwhp and 311 ftlb of torque when it was 102 outside. :auto:
What I did was go to a local muffler shop. I asked him to remove the stock mufflers and make a straight pipe to take their place. He was done in about an hour and charged me 80 hoops. I was able to select the tips I wanted and select the height and extension I wanted.
Check around and you may find a similar deal. I didn't even get my hands dirty.

Trust me you will lose some power, I have several hundred timeslips to back up my claim.
I went from 108 mph to 106 mph, that's a loss. My et's got better, but mostly due to me getting better with the car.
12.97@106 with eliminators or 13.07@108 with full exhaust. MPH was higher with full exhaust.

:iagree:
It cost me $30 - I had it done at Midas - yeh, can you belive it.
I had them install a straight pipe where the muffler was and reweld the stock tips back into place. Sound is not that loud , but sounds great too - I can't see spending $1K on a cat-back system until I have a lot of dough to blow
Is the loss of power with the LT1 or L98, I was considering these for my L98. I thought a CAt back system was a good way to gain power, wouldnt the eliminators have a similar effect by reducing back preasure ? I'm just looking for answeres before I buy something.
On an L98 you won't notice much power difference; the rest of the exhaust system is so restrictive.
To feel the power boost, install a 2 1/2" front Y, hi-flow cat and muffler elims; you can expect about 15-20chp gain and you will see the increase in your time slips. Of course you need to add an AFPR so you can bump fuel pressure to match fuel flow to the increased air flow at WOT.
The bottom line with an L98 (at least with the D-port heads) is that you do not need back pressure (D-ports minimize reversion and cam overlap isn't large enough to blow through the charge with no back pressure) if you properly tune the engine; remember it's a system.
I helped a friend install his Corsa catback on his 94 and he gave me his stock exhaust which I installed elims on. I have this exhaust on my 92 LT1, pretty much stock, and the sound is great. Now I sound like one of the guys at the shows. Some day, I'll buy the B&B catback which sounds just right for my purposes. But for now, I love these elims.
I applied these to my 90 which was a L-98, I personally noticed more of a power band shift rather than a power loss. It had a little less lower end torque but a little more upper end. I measured almost 7 more HP on my rolling dyno. It wasn't enough to feel but it did seem to run better. In all fairness the main reason I did it was there was a rattle in the left muffler that drove me nuts. It had to go. SO......
