Default Need feedback on long tube headers..

Is 1 3/4" or 1 5/8" primaries best for a "lightly modded" 350 (93 LT-1 with basic bolt ons). I have seen both used and find it to be a little confusing. I don't want to lose bottom end torque, so would 1 5/8" be better?

If they are ceramic coated, do you not need to worry about surrounding temps getting too hot?

Please provide ANY info you can on long tubes, ie, ideal flange size, reliable company, increase in sound, etc. At this point, I am more interested in best performance gain for the money, not really for the "best looking."

I currently have Corsa cat back with gutted cats, so would the long tubes join right up to the "fake" cats or would I remove them entirely? TIA. :seeya

Most of the real tuners will recommend 1-5/8" headers for stock engines. However, most of the power hungry will go for the 1-3/4" since it will match other perf mods to the motor.

Generally speaking, Lingenfelter recommends 1 5/8" up to about 400hp for a 350cid, and 1 3/4" past that. But this is only a guideline.

I am using the TPIS coated 1 5/8" long tubes. Yes the coating causes an overall drop in engine comp temps. I still had some critical components heat shielded that the headers came close to, just for added insurance.

Any forward (of the transmission) cats will have to go with longtube headers. Stick shifters might be able to get by with mini cats alongside the tranny, but nothing will fit there if you have an automatic, not even the mini cats.

I have mini cats after the tranny along with an H pipe in place of the reasonators. Corsa mufflers at the ends. The exhaust obviously is louder, but nothing really objectionable. Hardly any increase next to the car, but louder at the tailpipes with some reasonance at 3100 rpm inside.

You would need to have some really major mods in mind to warrant the use of 1 3/4" inch headers.
