i have heard that the stock rotors even on our j55 heavy duty brakes have a bad tendancy to warp easily if applied at high speeds and give in to brake fade fairly easily. i am considering starting to autocross and roadrace my 96 LT4 and am wondering what would be an economical upgrade in rotors?
I just bought the Baer Eradispeed two piece rotors, front and rear for less than $800. Anyone knows that these things aren't cheap, so at that price I couldn't pass it up.
You will like them. Besides being considerably lighter than stock, they also wear very well. I run them on road courses along with Hawk HP+ pads and Wilwood Hi-Temp fluid. Very little fade and give you the confidence to go deeper into the corners.
Save your money. Run the stockers, they are dirt cheap anymore. For what you will pay to cryo a rotor, you can dang near buy a new one. Plus what nobody talks about, because everybodys caught up in the hype, is that once you get them too hot, the value of the cryo is GONE. Unless you are going to get serious and eventually go for real race brakes, just upgrade your stock setup with good PFC pads and decent fluid. Check out the many, many threads on this subject. Good luck!
If you buy new performance rotors, get some comments from the other members here on the brand.
I got a set of SP drilled and slotted rotors. When I got them, they looked so cool! When I put them on, my tires were out-of-balance then.
And after about a month they started rusting like crazy to the point of having rust streaks on my wheels. I had to take them all off again, de-rust them, primer, sand and paint the hubs and also down in the slots between the two rotor surfaces.
You'd think they could take take 5 minutes at the SP factory and spray some clear wheel coating on them before they machined the rotor surfaces. It's a real hassel masking that part off so you can paint the hub. Email or call the people who's rotors you are thinking of buying and ask if they put any rust-preventive coating on them other than the creosote that washes off with water, put on so they won't rust in storage or shipping.

Re: aftermarket rotors? (BIG JIM 54)
I've been installing Power Slot rotors in cars lately and the owners seem to love them. Two of the cars were run out at Road America for a 2 day drivers school and they still look great. I am going to put a set on my 96 once I get some extra $ around. Good Price, Good Performance, Good looks  sounds like a winner to me. Oh yeah you can look up Power Slot rotors at the tirerack.
