Default Tranny problem, please help ...

i'm on my second 4L60, and i am starting to have some shifting problems.
here are the symptoms:

- the shift from 3rd to 4th misses(i.e. when it is about to shift the rpm just goes up but the car does not spped up), but when you release the gas pedal and apply it again it goes in to fourth.(manually shifting from 3rd to 4th works okay); lately, when you are travelling around 50mph in 3rd and you step on the gas, rpm goes up, but the car does not speed up, until you manually shift it into 4th

- sometimes when starting from a stop, and stepping on the accelerator, the rpm goes up, but the car acts like it is in neutral, and it eventually moves; there is a long delay before it engages

any input would be appreciated,

joel

Sounds like a classic 3-4 clutch problem. You'll probably need to do a rebuild. How many miles on it?

I had similar problems (plus a few more). I had 158K miles on it. The mechanic that did the rebuild said I probably could have easily gone another 8 or 9 miles (not K miles) before total failure. He said he'd never seen a 4L60 go much above 160K no matter how it was driven.

probably 25k miles. maybe those hard launches really messed it up. i just replace the rear end about 5000 miles ago. chipped a 3 teeth on the pinion gear.

i may go with a company i saw in one of the archives "bowtie overdrives". they claim a 700r4 tranny to handle up to 630 hp/tq for $1284. so it looks like i'm going to be spending atleast $2500 to get her back into the road(torque converter and labor).

thanks,

joel

I think VETTE FEVER 6-8 months ago had an article on a company that did xmission bullet proofing. They replaced the 1-2 and 3-4 5 plate clutches with 7 or 9 plates and beefed up a bunch of other stuff. I think they claimed 800-900HP.
