Default tach problem

before I bought the car a motor was put in and I put a snap-on scan tool on it and it said it was idleing at about 800 when the tach read 1500. and when i brought it up to 6000 on the tach the scan tool only said 3000. I was wondering if anyone had the same problem, I dont know if it is in a cam or crank sensor or if there are either of those. i asked a service person at gm and he said it could be the whole cluster but i dont buy it, he didnt seem like he knew what he was talking about.

Helps to post the year-but according to Gordon Killebrew at least 84-89 most tach problems were related to water in the main bulkhead connection-engine compartment. His recommendation unplug the connector an blow it out with air-the black grease in there is for anti corrosion and water gets trapped in the pockets. If you do check it-the connection should be sealed after plugging back in. :steering: or it might be the tach filter.

its a 90, sorry forgot. it is also idleing very rough and he said that could be because of the tach being messed up like that.
