I'm looking at doing some LowSpeed XCrossing and mid 13s down the quater mile,, so I'm looking for a SNELL aproved helmet. What do most of you guys were, open or close faced helmets? Any suggestions on what to get or look for?
whatever the rules require is the easiest thing...
for me? I would get open face... you ain't going all that fast, and it is more comfortable. Get the latest Snell rating, too.
Also, realize that helmets are to be replaced about every 5 years or so... the foam becomes harder and no longer absorbs energy as it is supposed to. It is worth my noggin to replace! Same goes for bicycle helmets...
:iagree: Open face is more comfortable, but I have a full faced helmet.
However, I would like to add that you may consider getting an SA helmet so you can use it for track open track events. Eventually you will likely want to do this a couple of times a year. If you are going to spend money to get the helmet you are looking for, you might as well spend a little more and get the SA rated helmet.
I just ran an autocross this past weekend and had a blast. The local club had plenty of helmets to borrow. I'm in the market for my own now. Unfortunately I realized that I don't exactly fit in my car with the helmet on. It's hard to do high performance driving while squatting a little.
I didn't let it stop me from having a great time though. Next time I'll have the top out with my roof brace in place.
Though an open face is easiest to use I have a Snell 90 closed face with sun visor.
I wear glasses and have no problems even with evening drag racint, if chit happens I like the extra protection of the shirld to keep stuff out of my face.
Definitely try it on first. Go to a big motorcycle store, they will have a selection. When I was buying my Kawasaki, the sales guy looked at my head and said I had a "Shoei" head. He was right. I tried on a bunch, and the Shoei fit the best.
