Anybody ever try removal of the backup light switch on the 6-speed tranmission by accessing it from above through the shifter boot area? I have to replace one on my 94 and was wondering if anyone had tried that. Accessing from below appears to be the typical way, but the space is very tight. Just thought I'd ask before I spent the time removing the console, boot, etc.
Thanks
You could try from above, but almost everyone - including the GM service manual - says the remove it from below. Unfortunately, and you'll find this out when you get under there, that the switch is on the driver's side which is the side with the LEAST amount of space; you could literally raise a small family in the space next to the ZF6 on the passenger side! Why the guys at GM never bothered to use this space to put all the 'replaceable' items, I don't know...
Let me guess, your backup lights aren't working right? Mine weren't (and still aren't) working either. I was going to replace the switch two summers ago, but when I found out how much GM wanted for the switch, and then was told that it's still a crap-shoot as to whether it would solve the problem permanently or not, I decided against it.
If you change yours and you find that your backup lights work for longer than a month, repost, or send me an email and let me know. I'll consider doing it then.
Unplug the switch and jump the connector contacts and see if the backup lights work. This will prove the switch is at fault. To remove the backup switch in my 4+3 I had to get my brother to machine a 7/8 socket to a hex peak- to -OD wall of .015 inch in order to get it on the switch. Nothing else would remove the backup switch!
