I've done some searching for previous posts about noise coming from the rear wheels and didn't come up with anything that sounds exactly what I'm experiencing.
On my 93 coupe I notice a loud clank from the driver side rear wheel area when starting from a stop and after changing directions. There is also a slight scraping sound for a while at slow speeds like a pad is rubbing weird. Pulled the wheel and checked the pads, rotor, and caliper and all appears to be fine there...no noticable rubbing for scraping. Am I looking at a u-joint or a bearing?
The very first thing I would do is inspect all rear suspension bushings. Your car is 11 years old, and they are probably beginning to deteriorate. If you find any deterioration or wear, replace them. Jack up one rear wheel at a time and grasp the tire at both 9 and 3 O clock and try to move the tire back and forth. Try this again at 12 and 6. Any lateral movement whatsoever should be investigated and it's source corrected.
Since you've eliminated the braking system as the source of the noise, try the following. Securely support the car on jackstands, put the car in neutral, climb under it and rotate each half shaft by hand. See if you find any looseness or slop that could create the noise, including the differential.
Half shaft u joints are cheap and easy to replace, so you might try them first if you don't find anything obvious. Wheel bearings are a little tougher and a lot more expensive. Eliminate everything else before plunking down $150 for a hub.
Good luck hunting, let us know what you find out.
