Weird idling issue
I had my 86 do just the same thing this morning, but on level ground. Started it up, and the idle stayed at 2K. It had done this to me several random times in the past year or so, but never found out what it was because it just went away, but today it happened again and I found out what it was. The TPS sensor.
I loosened the TPS sensor bolts, and adjusted the sensor by hand and the idle settled back to 600-700RPM from 2K RPM, and drove it back home to use my volt meter. I had it set to .65 volts for the last month or so with no issues and no trouble codes. I even checked it with my volt meter this morning before I left to make sure it's stil set at .65volts. It was, and then I had the problem you describe the second time I went to start it this morning. I shut off and restarted the car several times, and disconnected the battery for a while. This did nothing about the 2K idle. Found that my TPS is jumping up to about .70 volts at closed throttle without even touching it. I set it to where the idle is normal, .60-.65volts closed throttle, and then it's at .70volts or more, again when it holds idle at 2K, the next couple of times I start it up. So I reset it down to .60volts and so far so good. I am suspecting I have a bad TPS sensor that is not holding the voltage that I set it to while idling. I am keeping a close eye on it. I think you may be having the same problem with your 86 also. The next time the idle is at 2K, check the voltage of the 2 upper wires of the TPS sensor while it's idling with a volt meter. It might just be the adjustment is too high, the TPS mouting bolts are loose, or the TPS is not holding the set voltage that is set. Good luck
