Help! '85 4+3 stuck in overdrive.

Help! '85 4+3 stuck in overdrive.
I took my '85 4+3 out on the highway today and all seemed well until I got back into town. I tried to switch the OD off but it won't disengage. The overdrive light on the information panel goes out but the OD stays on even in first gear. I disconnected the OD relay and still had no success getting back into direct drive. I tend to think it is something electrical but don't know where to look next. Any ideas appreciated. Thanks in advance.
