Default Instrument Cluster question

The left two bulbs went out in my intrument panel. I took my car over to the corvette specialist near my house and they said that you can just replace the bulbs and that they would have to send it somewhere, where the whole unit would be redone. They also said this would cost me between 5 and 600. There HAS to be a more cost-effective method of replacing two burnt-out lightbulbs than getting the entire unit redone, however there did not seem to be any easy way to gain access to the bulbs. Could I possibly just do a crude wiring of a small bulb between the metal and the plastic? Right now I can barely see my speed and gas etc during the day, but at night, only the tachometer is lit up. Any suggestions?

Very easy to replace. There are four bulbs that backlight the instrument cluster. Just remonve the dash cover and you will see four silver covers over each bulb-pull them out and replace them, taking care not to touch them with your fingers. NAPA carries them and they range from $6.00-$12.00 each. I have had to do all four of mine. I think the bulb # is 882, but I cannot remember for sure.

You can replace yourself without too much difficulty. I replaced the LCD on mine, which was more involved that replacing the bulbs, and it only took me about 45 mins. Just be careful, there are alot of delicate parts in there.
Let us know how it turns out.

Oh, damn, ok. I think I remember what your talking about. Are they little metal circles a little bigger than a quarter? Do I need to do anything special to take them off, or do I just pull on em?

Just take a small bladed screwdriver and remove the quarter sized tin plates,
needle nose pliers and take them out, as stated do not touch the new bulbs with your bare hands, the oils will help burn them out prematurely, use surgical gloves or wipe them off with booze (alcohol) your done! enjoy  for 5-600 I'll come to your place and take care of everything :D
