Default hmmmm.. Help please...

All,
I took my 94 for a ride Sunday. It started acting up, momentarily cutting out at cruising speed after about 30 miles. Came to a stop, checked things out, and car ran poorly from idle to cruising speed (missfiring, etc). Decided not to risk it, so I turned and headed home. Seemed ok at 58 - 59 MPH, but anything over or under, the car was horrible, backfiring et al.

I noticed that the temp gauge, which has alwas been solid at 185, was a bit over. When I was about 2 miles from home, I had to stop for a red light. The car felt like it was running on 2 cylinders and it did have all it could do to get up the hill toward home.

I started it Monday AM, and it ran super while cold. I know if it approached 185 degrees again it would start acting up.

Does this sound like Opti? It was replace shortly before I got it. I see no evidence of any coolant leakage.

Any input is appreciated....

Thanks!

I would start with the simple stuff.

1) is it setting a code?

If not, I would check the fuel filter and/or the coil wire. Also, I suspect the car has been in storage, did you add a fuel stabilizer? If not, the gas could be bad... if you did, there could still be water in the tank. Add some dry-gas.

2) if it is, determine what the code is.

A big suspect for this kinda problem would be the MAF...

You see, the IAC does not do anything after the engine passes about 1100rpm or so... I don't remember exactly where, but it's name is IDLE Air Control... not RUNNING Air Control!

I don't honestly think it's the opti. When they fail, they do it gradually.

no code, and the fuel is new. I never really put it in storage, hasn't gone more than a few weeks without being driven.

If I recall it started this at the end of last fall while still in regular use, just gotten much much worse now.

Thanks!

I'm wondering if your catalytic convertors have fused - the symptoms for that are - it runs good when cold then looses power as it warms up. Easy to check - just have someone rev the car when hot and check how much air is coming from the exhaust.

It's just a thought, and it may not explain the backfiring and so on but thought I'd mention it as it's so easy to check.

good luck
