There is a little switch (plunger with spring) on the door that turns the lights on when you open the door and off when you shut it. This switch can stick closed with age and cause such a problem as you describe. Look inside the door area of the body and locate this switch. Grab the end and pull away from the switch. If the lights come on, you have found your problem!
i forgot to mention the lights do work but sometimes they come on when i open the door and sometimes they don't.??????
The courtsey light switches in the door might have become broken or stuck. You can take them out of the door (two small screws) and use some electrical contact cleaner first then a lube like WD40 for the plunger. If all else fails, they are ~$12.00 each from MAD (now MAM).
