Just curious as to what mods are out there for the LT1. I just broke the bank buying my 95 but I'm want to mod it already :D . Are there any so called free-mods as there are for the L98's?
Not really. Throttle body by-pass, I guess. Cutting the air filter lid doesn't help much in an LT1, either. There's something guys do to the spark plugs that I can't remember but someone else I'm sure will...
HEEYY springfielder! that's my home town, hope to see you there in a couple months, when i get back form Japan!
Free mods? well.... cheap mods... like an LT-4 knock module, K&n filter with aftermarket air lid/box. throttle body coolant bypass.. that's about it for under 100 bucks.
i'd suggest swapping to 1.6 (or 1.75, if you can find the kit) roller rockers and swap on a cold air kit, and the knock module. bolt up a custom 3" exhaust with muffler elims and call it an afternoon.... shop smart and do your own work, and you'll be under 500 bucks, and gain a few HP. Guessing about 25 ponies, putting you in the 250RWHP and up club.... being conservitive.
Not a lot you can do at all. The General did his homework when he built the LT1. The open air lid & K&N filter is basically useless on the stocker. All the bolt on's like airfoils and throttle performance switches, IAT relocation, hypertech programs, and larger throttle bodies are all useless as well.
You can't really even tune it up like you can on the L98. Timing is set with the opti and the computer, so unless you've got what you need to reprogram it you can't do anything with that. The TPS is self zeroing so there's not tweaking to be had there either.
The best thing you can do for your LT1 is to safe the money on the gimmicks in Ecklers and save up for real mods. As mentioned, 1.6 rockers are a good bang for the buck. Although you probably won't feel much of a difference they are good for about 15 horses. If you can find 1.7 rockers you can give them a shot. They are far less common but a few of us have used them with great success, althoug as of yet I don't think anybody has tried them on a stocker. The theory is the same though. LT1 heads do continue to flow past the lift point of 1.6 rockers with stock heads, so 1.7's should give you more power than 1.6's.
Of course the throttle body bypass is a nice freebie. I don't know that it really does anything for horsepower but it makes life easier if you have to remove your intake and throttle body. A 160 thermostat, questionable for power but will make your car run cooler at cruise. For it to be most effective you would want to reprogram your computer to take advantage of this and turn the fans on sooner. For that matter you can reprogram your fans so that they come on sooner and even with the 180 thermostat you'll keep the car a lot cooler.
The next best minor modification would be long tube headers. I say minor because they don't require that you crack into the engine. Long tubes won't pass emissions though because they do away with the cats. You can install bullet cats and still pass the sniffer test, it just all depends on how strict your state is on emissions. If you don't have to pass emissions at all you can get long tubes for about $500 and pick up a few extra ponies and some torque across the board.
Don't bother with shortie headers either. The only benefit they give you is that they look better and they make life easier when changing the plugs. Otherwise they do almost nothing for performance. There might be 5 HP to be found with them, but for the cost it's hardly worth it. Unless of course you live in California and you have to pay extreme amounts of money just to get 5 HP because everything has to have a CARB EO number on it.
As Nathon mentioned there aren't really any free mods that do much of anything. Your biggest bangs for the buck will come from rear gears (I choose 3.75's and love them!) exhaust, and a pair of long tubes. Those are just basic bolt-on's.
If you want to get greedy without opening the engine up for heads/cam work, go and look into a nitrous system. That will make you grin real quick!
I see your in town, there are a few others of us here too from the forum. Feel free to drop me an IM sometime. I can show you what these mods will do to your car. See my signature for example.
i have also recently began to modify my LT1. first thing first is do a full tune up and flush all the fluids. this alone gained me about 3mph in the quarter. i guess my stock plugs/wires/fluids were REALLY worn out.
then i started with the basic free/cheap mods: cut lid w K&N filter, TB airfoil, TB coolant bypass, 160* stat, and finally muffler elims. with these mods i gained about 2.5mph.
you can see the gains in my sig. i track & dyno test every "group" of mods ive done to the car
O.K. it's my turn to tell you what Mods to do with your 95.....
do K&N open air lid now!! save for an optispark
Don't bother with gears , cams, heads, Roller rockers,....do them after you do this 1)...Dana 44
2)...2800 torque converter
3)...Drag Radials
4)...performance mufflers..not a cat-back just mufflers
the exhaust on a 95 flows good enough..save the money from the catback to buy long tube headers...Do this and no stock C5..Z06...LT4..will ever know what hit them...you will be running 12's in thw 1/4 mile :beatdeadhorse:
As for the rest of it gears and a converter will certainly make the car faster in the quarter, if that's all you're after. Personally I don't like the way a car with a high stall converter drives on the street.
I would really like to eventually see around 350-360 rwhp. What mods will be able to give those #'s? How much hp will the stock heads support unported vs ported?

I did the basic mods: cut lid, K&N filter, TB bypass, IAT relocate, muffler elims, 160* thermostat, Ed Wright fastchip, and the big one: 3.54 gears. With all of that on my '92 A4, with a stock engine, stock TC, and street tires, I'm getting 60 foot times in the low 1.9's and doing the quarter in 13.25-13.35, depending on weather. Idon't think I can get into the 12's without more $$, such as long tubes (hard to do here in Mass with emission testing), or 1.6 RR's, or nitrous. More serious $$ such as heads and cam will take you well into the 12's, but it's gonna cost you.

Also whats the best gear ratio for an a4

dana 36......3.07s they will last longer with modding
dana 44...... 3.45s...3.54s....3.73s.. anyone of these will do it
Nitrous is the best bang-for-your buck. period. it's just a question if you wanna do it or not. Doing nitrous right is somthing of an ancient black art practiced by few. If I was in Springfield right now, I'd hook you up, but the marine corps wants me here right now, soooo :flag doing my duty
it's also pretty cheap to put in some lowering bolts, but that's kind of a different topic.
*off topic here* newbie to C4s... Is there a corvette brotherhood in springfield? if not... there should be
