The whole unit includes the base (with high res signal generator, the opti part of the opti spark,) the cap, and the rotor. Replace them all at the same time.

hello i just replaced my opti the dealer wanted 652.00 but if you look on ebay you can find them much cheaper. I bought mine for 268.00 complete. the cap and rotor are pretty exspensive to replace separately. its better to replace the whole thing and the waterpump for a little extra insurance. just type in lt1 optispark on ebay theres a lady from canada that sells a bunch of them
:smash:

for the most part, a failing opti will not keep the engine from running.

I would check the coil/coil wire/ignitor or a fuel delivery problem.

Eventually your car won't start its a matter of time. Find someone that works on vettes or any LT-1 engine .DO NOT GO TO the dealer they will take total advantage of you and Chevrolet can not do a thing. If you can go to gmpartsdirect.com and do it yourself. Chevrolet is professional but most dealers are not.

I have been thinkning about this for a while and there are two factors to consider. The cap and rotor are what usaly fail on the opti system, atleast on the vented style and it is a bit of a PITA to swap. The cap and rotor are less then 1/2 the price of a new opti but if that isn't the problem you get the fun of doing it all over again. If I was straped for cash I would do the cap and rotor and if I had a few extra $$$$$$$$$$$$ (which is never) I would replce the unit. I decided two months ago to go DELTEQ so the cap and rotor will never again be a problem for me but I don't think the answer to your question is as cut and dry as it seems

I totally disagree with you on this. What you need to say is SOME Chevy service departments take advantage of you. Yes, the labor is expensive at $70 an hour and they do have flat rate charges for this job. Yes, you will pay LIST price for the parts. They are not in this to lose money. But to say all of Chevrolet is not professional is just not correct.

Before you go to a Chevy service department for any fix, check them out. Ask who is the LT1 expert and talk to him. If he doesn't seem knowledgable try another shop. GM mechanics specialize in areas like electrics, transmissions, engine rebuilds, etc. Not many chose to become masters at the Vette because there just isn't any money in it, not enough Vettes out there. It's kinda like the Maytag repairman. :) :chevy

The screws on the Rotor came loose on my opti. Loctite would have cured the problem. Ended up replacing the whole opti but taking it apart and fixing the screws/rotor would have fixed the problem. The car died going down the track with no warning.

Most Chevy parts departments will work with you on the price if your nice. Believe whole sale is around $260. Bought mine at Chevy for $185 but do alot of business with them.

Corrected my post part of the sentance was missing. Chevrolet is interested iin hearing feedback on the dealers practices but can't really control what they do.
