95 U-Joints - Hard or Easy??
I getting alot of clicking from the back when I let the clutch out in 1st. Car has only 48K. Are the half shafts fairly easy to get out? How about the Drive shaft.
Thanks for any info, tips, tricks.
You would have to remove the wheel bearing (which is rather easy, really), brush clean with a steel brush and apply a liberal amount of anti-seize.
If it IS the u-joint, you will need to get under the car and grab the shaft, if it wiggles around the ujoint, then it is worn, otherwise, it's fine.
As for replacing, it is easy, just time consuming. You will need a press or big-**** vice to press the new ujoints back in.
The steps for 1/2 shafts (in general):
1) jack up rear and support with jackstands... you will need the floor jack in step 3.
2) remove rear tires
3) release the tension on the rear leaf spring using the floor jack, remove bolt and repeat for otherside.
4) remove center spring clamp bolts.
5) remove tie rod or lower locating link.
6) remove the 34mm nut that holds the stub axle to the hub.
7) remove the bolts (8mm) that hold the inner ujoint to the diff
8) drop the shaft out
9) replace ujoints
10) repeat for otherside
11) reverse for reinstallation
The forum highly recommends Spicer ujoints.
I did this back in Feb... didn't rush and it too about 5 hours.
I seriously recommend investing in a Helms (factory service) manual, http://www.helminc.com.
Good luck!
