1985 Code 33
I've been fighting a "hunting idle" ever since I got the car almost two years ago. This past week I had some time off from work so I decided to change the intake gaskets. I had no codes prior and except for the idle issue it ran great.
So, after changing the gaskets and restarting the car I got codes 33 and 42. 42 was simple enough...I had the distributor off a tooth. Reinstalled the distributor correctly and no more code 42.
The 33 is constant and the car runs like s*%t. I've replaced the relays behind the battery and the MAF itself and no change.
Why would changing intake gaskets cause this kinda trouble?
BTW the car idles fine now...no more hunting idle.

Check for adequate spark to cylinder, correct TPS setting and IAC for the idle, and ESPECIALLY look for vacuum leaks.
Better yet I checked the archives and found a tip to check the cluster fuse.
Sure enough it was popped.
Replaced it.
I'm RODDIN'!!!! :steering:
Thanks for takin' the time Vader! The Forum always seems to come thru! :grouphug:
:seeya
My 85 had the same idle problem and i fixed it by doing the following:
1) I replaced the fuel regulator diafram
2) Cleaned out the air idle control
3) replaced the Maf ( i did not need too!)
4) relocated the MAT sensor from the plenglem to the air intake covering ( located just before the MAF)
Now you must clear all the codes and you should be fine.
In 1985, there was burn off module, located behind the center of the dash, and not a burn off relay.( the relay replaced the burnoff module in 1986)
Now if your burnoff module is bad then.........NOW HOLD ON TO YOUR HAT...IT COSTS $800.00 FOR THE DAM PART!!!
I am working on a project that replaces the whole burnoff module altogether.
I am up grading the 1985 wiring harnes and computer with 1989 wiring harnes and computer. This set up will use a burnoff relay in stead of a burn off module.
The 89 computer is also faster than the 85 computer and there for the car will run better.
I will let you know how i make out
