Unusual idle restore problem
As memtioned before in earleir posts, this is a new Vette to me. This is my 26th Corvette most of them being C!, C2, C3 models. I have had an off again on again probem. Here it is.
Sometimes when I come to a stop with the motor warm after being driven for a number of miles the motor dies. The C4 has an automatic so it drops to idle long before I stop and I can check the tach to see if the motor has died.
This does not happen very often but it is a pain when it does. Does this sound like a dirty IAC, fuel filter or are there other problem areas that I need to look at? No codes are set when this problem occurs.
In general this car runs like a champ and gives me great economy with good performance. With the exception of my 425Hp 1967 coupe, this is the best Vette I have owned.
Best Regards,
Don in VT :flag
Given the fact that your vette (an 87 - checked your profile :D) is now 17 years old, it is beginning to age, more so than wear out.
The IAC is in a vulnerable area, hot, potentially wet, beat upon by bad serp belts... just icky.
I would take off the air intake and spray some FI cleaner down the throat. The IAC port is on the bottom of the throttle body. it's a little hole down in there... just flood it with the cleaner, and nasty stuff will come out! I did it on bastet44's (my GF) 87 a couple of weeks back... the sludge that came out was seriously nasty.
Try that first...
Then, invest some $$$ in a Helms Manual, http://www.helminc.com - best coin you will ever spend on your C4!!! These cars are SO much more complex than a C1~C3... just nuts...
statements like that make me realise I wasted the first 50 years of my life !!
Congrats on the 26 and for liking the C4, hope you sort it out,
S'nut
