Im pretty sure that I am going to get slotted rotors with Hawk brake pads and upgraded brake lines... BTW, I autocross and plan on doing some open track events.
1) Where is a good place to get the slotted rotors?
2) Are the Hawks the best option? Other options?
3) Are the brake lines from MAD good?
EDIT: took off the rotors on ebay. They looked cheap.
I just got a set of BruteStop rotors from RockAuto, they are slotted and cross-drilled. Look real nice, I really didn't care about the cross-drilled, but not too concerned with any "weakness" in them. I do AutoX every weekend, and thinking about the track sometime this summer. They were $66 each for the 13" HD rotor.
Went with PFC-Z pads from AutoZone. Heard good things about them from the Autocross & Roadracing section. They stop good, quite and dust is minimal. They don't stop as good as my CarboTech Panther pads, but are very close with less noise and dust. The Panthers could put you thru the windshield on R-Compounds.
The PFC-Z pads also have a lifetime warranty. There are lots of people in the local F-body club who run these pads and will change them several times in a year, and it's free.
The logic of putting a lifetime warranty on a wear item such as brake pads is beyond me, but they do it. This greatly offsets the price of these pads, since you can replace them many times for free.
If you are going to be doing any road racing in the future, I would scrap the cross-drilled rotors. You will more than likely crack them by the end of your first day.
As for pads, I wouldn't use anything other than PFC 01 pads on the track. You can get away with the Z pads for autocrossing.
I was looking for your advice. So what do you suggest I do for my brakes. Like I said, I was planning on slotted rotors(for my fronts only), Hawk breaks and MAD break lines. Do you have a better suggestion? What is the most important issue when dealing with this? Im on a budget and really would like to keep the price down, but at the same time make a significant development with my stopping power. Im looking for the best bang for the buck here.
I would stay with the stock replacement rotors at $70/each. They don't look as cool but they will get the job done on the track. I'm not sure what brand of brake lines MAD sells, but as long as they aren't Russell lines you'll be fine. I have Earl's on mine but I hear Goodrich is good as well. As for pads, get the PFC 01 pads all the way around (this will make the biggest difference over all the other hardware), and make sure to put some good fluid in the lines. I have used nothing but ATE Super Blue and am verry happy with it.
The pads will run you about about $300 all the way around but well worth it. They generate a lot of dust and will squeak, but minor hinderances if you value your life. :)
If you can add some brake cooling ducts to your front rotors, that will help tremendously. Good luck with the racing... you'll get hooked on it.
One more question and its a stupid one. How do I know if I have the HD rotors and does it matter? Should I get the HD rotors if my car dont already have them?
Would I hae to do anything to upgrade the calipers or anything special like that if I go with the 13" HD rotors?
I am not real familiar what is required to do the swap. A number of people have done this, however. I think if you post a new thread on that subject, or search the archives, you will get all the answers you need.
I still need advice and answers to my questions please! :( I think I have decided not to do my brake lines because I am not convinced that it will give me any better performance. Besides, it seems like a PITA. The slotted rotors however, I am still stuck on. Will I be able to use the 13" HD slotted rotors without any modifications? And Im not seeing a firm recommendation on the brake pads either. Help!!! :cry
As far as upgrading to J55's, you will need new calipers, 13" rotors, and mounting brackets. All of which you can find on: http://www.superchevyperformance.com/
They really break it down well so you know exactly what you will need.
If you are going to track the car, you will definitely want to be putting SS lines on it. It takes under an hour to swap out the 4 lines once the car is in the air. You will have to bleed the brakes after this, but you will want to do that anyway because of the better fluid you will be putting in.
As for pads, I told you what I recommended. There is only 1 race pad as far as I am concerned and that's the PFC 01 pad. Don't get 'em if you can't put up with the brake dust and the squealing.
