I had one of the earlier units, big waste of money. I don't know about the newer units, but I feel track time is a better way to see what the car runs than using a G-Tech.
I had a unit similar to a G-Tech. It was a valuable tool. It taught me to drive MY car. I learned how to launch it on the street and was able to do some tuning also. I brought my 60' times down from 2..16 to 1.86 just by adjusting my launch. Better drivers may not get as much out of as I did. I guess it is like training wheels. Some need them when learning to ride, some don't.
I only have used the earlier model. I think it works great for 0-60, 1/4 miles are okay as long as you know that the speed needs to be corrected to be compared to a 1/4 drag strip. G-Tech measures actual while the drag strip measures an avarage speed (not sure from what, I am not a drag racer).
That being said, on my 85 best 0-60 was 5.2 second
My 94 is 4.6 seconds and that is with major tire spin.
I have found the 60-0 braking NEVER worked, I always would be at a stop and it kept on counting. But I was running very agressive pads. The old units had a limit of +-1.27gs. Perhaps I was slowing faster then -1.27gs?
The new units look really cool. Plus have 3 sensors so probably are less sensitive to setup.

Re: G TECH USERS (VAHROOM)
Gtech is good for improving your driving skills... the numbers themselves aren't very reliable, and not a substitute for track times.
My best is 14.12 @ 107.6mph.
Now tell me, can a stock '85 with muffler elims and wussy 255s in back do 107 mph in the quarter? I doubt it! I'd be happy to even hit 98 or 99 mph.
It's a fun device nonetheless. So far, I've pulled .97 lateral Gs on it, 127 foot braking distance, and 5.7 0-60mph. I keep it in the car, cause I never know when I'll get the urge to best myself.
I bought the competition pro model, the one with the large LCD screen, I am quite happy with it. Much improved over the original unit. If you have $250 to spend and nothing else to spend it on - I'd highly recommend it.
I had the old model and now have the G-Tech competition. They are both good units but you need to understand how they work to get the full benefit. The units are very accurate if you can get a straight road to run on. I.e. at the track they will both give you close readings to your actual time.
The best way to use a G-Tech is to continuously use the same 1/4 mile road and see how you can improve the timing (through practice and performance mods). If you constantly change roads then you will get inconsistant results. I.e. The G-Tech uses the direction and strength of G-Forces (gravity being one) to determine your acceleration.
For example, my best time on G-Tech is 11.4 @ 120 mph. This is on a road that had a mild downward slope which helped my car accelerate down hill. Consistantly my car is a mid 12's car with 115mph on a good road so the above reading is not accurate.
I have the comp version, and I have not tested it with track results, but I think it's a cool device. I ave. 4.3 0-60 MPH and that's feathering the gas to avoid tire spin as much as I can. I've run a best of 3.9 0-60MPH with the tires nice and warm (kuhmo street tires) which still isn't the best traction. O I have 2.59 gears. I've never tried to do 1/4 miles because there is no where to run it around here. Traffic is so bad getting a 60MPH run in is lucky. I hope to get to the track in the next week or so and test it.

If you read the manual that came with your g-tech, you will see noted that the gtech measures actual 1/4 mile speed instead of averaging it over the last 1/8th? (i think) like a track does. This makes the trap speeds around 7mph high. :hat :p:

Yeah.. trap speed vs actual speed. The track averages the last 50 feet I believe. Basically, it can't figure your actual speed, so it measures the time it takes to travel between two points.
I've looked all over the web for other's mph comparisons with track times.. obviously cars with more umph towards the end of the 1/4 will have a bigger descrepancy.. but that 107 mph is still way off. at least by 5mph.
My gtech was off by ~2 tenths at the track, but I don't recall mph.
