i did an engine rebuild a time ago, and noticed, on my stock headers, where the 4 tubes are welded together, the weld was torn, i had an exhaust leak, which have driven me crazy since i had the car..
i welded it leakfree, and have driven her about 500 miles, with more than a few hot-cool cycles..
now, i think the noise, -and the leak.-is back
which headers can-should i use?? any suggestions??
Long tube, short tube, which brand, which part number?? i dont want to loose the low end torque!!
You haven't listed what you did to the engine, but odds are, that if you go to a 1 5/8ths" primary tube header you will have a torque gain. The more common and reccommended 1 3/4" headers won't cost you net torque, but they will cost you torque over the smaller tubed set up.
With those mods (and a few other simple ones) you can have your L98 at the border of 1 3/4" & 1 5/8" LT headers; my preference is 1 3/4" and they are more common for L98s.
Also, toss the "frisbee" from the front of your engine, install a 160deg F t-stat & fan switch, install a K&N air filter with cut lid and maybe underdrive crank pulley.
For a cheap intake mod to realy help top end breathing try the siamese base. It will cost a little low end torque but nicely improve top end breathing.
If you don't have an AFPR you need one to add more fuel at WOT. This is a nice tuning aid till you get a custom chip burned and it may allow you to use stock injectors.
Also full roller rockers will aid top end breathing; chose the correct ratio for you new cam.
With these mods you L98 will likely pull strongly to 6k RPM or so and still have great low end torque.
i installed CC roller tip rocker, 1.52 ratio, have already cut lid and K&N, manual fan switch...what i dont have now is the t-stat, but i think i´ll go the 180deg route
i can burn chips myself, also have a WBo2 so trimming fuel is not a problem
can you tell me, where to get 1 5/8" or 1 3/4" headers?
No. If emissions are not a problem then long tubes are the only way to fly. Shorties are pretty, but that's about it. They might give you 5 hp which is hardly worth the money.

With those mods you are nowhere near the limit of the 1 5/8ths" headers. It is a rare 350 engine, indeed, that will be able to better utilize the 1 3/4" headers. Check with Ski-down-it and Corkvette, if you want confirmation. Forget shorty's. Long tubes, only.
Hooker does not. Hedman does. Many of the guys on here really don't like the Hedmans. Some others do. I can't speak for any other brands. It will be worth the research. Good luck, and...
