Default Computer Reprogram After LT4 Hot Cam Install

What are the chances of the engine light coming on after the Hot Cam install. A engine light will fail emissions here in Louisiana. The cam is being installed on a brand new long block...original computer. Should it pass emissions if the light does not come on? If indeed it does come on...how do I get it to go out without actually taking out the bulb. In other words...I want it to be "right." Thanks!

Based on your sig, I assume you have a '96. In many but not all cases, the HOT Cam will set a P0300 misfire code on '96 OBD II cars.

There are two ways to correct for this...have the idle speed programmed higher (850 to 900 rpm will do the trick) or have the misfire diagnostic rpm increased. The factory programming has the misfire diagnostic set to start at 325rpm...i.e. as soon as the car starts. Tune the PCM so the diagnostic rpm starts at 1000.

You make it sound pretty easy to do this...but how do you actually do it? Thanks!

It's easy if you have the programming software. If not, you'll have to pay a Tuner like Ed Wright or PCM for Less to do it for you.

LT1 Edit is the only game in town for OBD II tuning needs. Unless you plan to do a lot of other work, it's not very cost effective. The software and cable are $550 not including the cost of a laptop and scanning software. Most Tuner's charge $300-$400.

How about the programmer from Superchips that allow you to reprogram for bigger cams and such. Anybody had any luck with them?

Don't know about your state, but in Illinois, I believe they actually check if the bulb is working. If you take the bulb out, the car will fail emissions. For some reason, my car didn't get the misfire code, but I did get some other code. Something to do with the maf circuitry (can't remember). I sent the computer to PCMforless and about week later took it for emissions. Passed without any problems.
