I seem to have an oil leak not all the time. Its seems to leak when front is parked down hill. I am thinking it coming from oil pan around the front.I just replace water pump it seem pretty dry up there, just some greasy crust no fresh oil leaks. How hard is it to drop oil pan or should i let dealer find and fix it.
Anyone know any good mechanics in south NJ near manahawkin.
Thanks Rich
The most common oil leaks in the LT1 and 4 usually come from the seals in the timing cover or the intake manifold. Valve covers can also be a good place for a leak. Oil leaks can be tuff to pin point. Make sure it's oil and not power steering fluid. Find a mechanic that knows how to use a dye and special light to find the leak.
If it turns out to be the oil pan gasket then it is really easy to change. Remove the starter(2 bolts). The oilfilter & adapter(2 allen bolts). The two knock sensor heat shields(2 nuts each). Remove the clutch inspection cover(4 bolts). Remove the oil pan(lots of bolts(can't remember off the top of my head how many).
Get the fel-pro oil pan gasket set. It will come with the oil filter adapter gasket you need. Apply sealant to the 4 corners only, extending it about an inch in either direction.
If you know what you are doing, you could knock this out in an hour.
Actually, you say you replaced your water-pump. I'd check the water-pump drive shaft seal on the timing cover for leaks. These seals are junk and tend to leak alot especially after a WP failure.
I don't think its the valve covers i think its either the front of the pan or behond opti spark. How hard is it to remove balancer then opti to get to timing cover? Do i have to drop oil panto do this?
To take the timing cover off, the water-pump, opti, balancer & hub need to come off. You can loosen the oil pan bolts and pry it down to get the timing cover off, but this sometimes causes the seal to tear.
You can do a visual check of the timing cover by just pulling the WP, opti, and balancer(leaving the hub on). NOTE, the balancer is supposed to come off without a puller. It might be tough to get off after removing the bolts so tap it lightly with a mallet or shake it around. It will come off, a puller will be needed to get the hub off though.
Will balancer will clear the rack? What if i need to remove the hub to change timing cover gasket and seals? what kind o puller will i need and when its time reinstall how does it go on? I have worked on older chevy small blocks done cams but this is the first LT1.
If you just changed the water pump, there is a good chance that is where your oil leak is located. The waterpump drive is hard to reinstall without crimping the seal.
How do I reinstall the hub the balancer goes on?
I'm thinking seens i have come this far i might as well drop oil pan remove timing cover and replace all seals and gaskets.
