The best advice is to "give the motor what it wants".
If you don't get ping or knock retard with regular, save some $$ and use it.

Use the lowest octane fuel that you can without timing retard. For most stock TPI cars this means that regular old 87 octane will be fine.

Run regular fuel and if the engine knocks just add methyl tertiary butyl ether.

 Corvette Guru, Gorden Killebrew, has always said that high octane fuel is unnecessary!
Now that fuel costs are way up...I hear ya Gorden! :D
I have even weaned my 82 Z28 with holly carb, mild cam and mechanical distributor, down to 87 octane and it runs great

You can do a search on this topic. It has been highly debated in the past. The consences has been that the lowest octane that doesn't knock or produce knock counts is not only the least expensive, but the more powerful, also. Of course, they're is always the uniformed, "nothing but the best for my baby " crowd.

My 86 coupe is designed for 87 but it will ping at the 1st to 2nd shift (Auto) at WOT. I now run 89 and it dosn't ping. I have always run what the engine wants, no more but no less. I can run 87 if I stay off the loud pedal, but why have a Vette if you can't punch it every now and then.

I think high test is usualy a waste of money if you don't have problems running regular. Check out the earlier thread on the test I did
