Helping a friend pull a sick LT1 out of his 92/6sp convertible and am looking for helpful hints and recommendations. Manual he bought does not mention dropping the transmission????
1. Is it possible to pull the motor without dropping the tranny?
2. Does radiator/hood have to come off?
3. Would it be easier to drop the tranny anyway?
Any guidance appreciated. Also, owner looking for a low budget Stroker Long block to drop back in. (4-5K 425+ hp) Any Recommendations ?
Yes it is posible and not that hard. I just got done with a swap in my 94 less then three months ago. I had read a lot of people say to drop the trany but just couldnt see the point so I did a search found one or two people who had pulled the motor with the trany in place and gave it a go. It slipped right out and in w/ no problems. I am so glad I left the trany in place, that would have been extra work I just did not need. Leave the belhousing in place and pull the motor, no problems. One thing that helps is to pull the motor mounts. When the motor is ready to come out lift it slightly then remove the mounts, same going in get the motor bolted to the trany then reinstall the mounts.
As far as tips go
1. pull the exhaust
2. disconect everything Wiring fuel lines ect...
3. Unbolt trany from the bell housing (leave bell housing on motor)
4. Pull clutch slave cyl.
5. Get lots of beer and mabey some hard stuff
Heres a pic of the motor going in w/ the trany in the car
I hate to be the one that always disagree's, and I know that the engine is out, but I wouldn't pull the tranny. Also, if you put a floor jack under the tranny you can roll the car around and the jack will just roll around also.(on concrete) Another way is to put a 2x4 across the upper radiator and the master cylinder, then use a rope to tie the input shaft up to the 2x4 for tranny support. The last method won't work for installing the engine, but you can move the car. You can also pull the engine without removing the hood, but I think that it's more trouble than it's worth depending on the tools you have available. Good luck with the new engine!!!
