I really didn't want to lose all of my radio settings so I pulled the ECM fuse. The trouble code did not disappear, so I just decided to leave it since things are fine (it was a code 36 and I replaced the MAF relays).
Then, several days later I used the old paper clip and...the code 36 was gone. Why would that happen when I had not done anything after the fuse pull to cause it to disappear?

That may be forever a mystery.
You can reset only the ECM by opening the connector in the Orn wire near the battery for a minute or so; this may be easier than gaining access to the fuse holder.

Some codes are set in history and will not disappear simply by removing power to the ECM. Using a paper clip to clear codes is what has to be done to clear any history codes.
