your pump is DOA.

The fuel circuit is backed up by the oil pressure switch. If the fuel pump relay fails, it will cause a slow start condition, but the car will start and run. As long as the oil pressure reads more than 4 psi.

changing the pump is a piece of cake... I just finished (10 minutes ago) replacing mine...

:iagree:
The odds are very strong that it is the pump. The relay is at the top of the firewall, just to the right of the WW motor. You can jump terminals "A" and "G" on your ALDL to "force the pump to run, if it will.

The correct way to test the pump is to apply 12 volts to terminal G. Terminal A is ground and won't do anything when connected to G.

I think the jumper is correct. I read that in the both the Helms manual and Charles Probsts book "Corvette Fuel Injection and Electronic Ignition".

I got my information from the 1985 GM shop manual page 6E3-27, Chart A-7A : "Apply 12 volts to fuel pump test terminal". This is terminal G. I have verified this on my 85.

I also have Charles Probst's book and page 155 fig. 7-12 shows that 12 volts need to be applied to the fuel pump test terminal to power the pump.

I stand corrected.

However, I still think it's a wasted exersize! The pump is done...

It looks like you guys are correct. I just reread my Helms and it says, "to apply 12 volts to terminal "G". Terminal "A" IS a ground. I blew the priming circuit in my ECM, years ago, and I installed a push button up under the dash. I had thought my push button jumped "A" & "G". Obviously not. I must have found a 12 v source to jump to "G". I stand corrected.

Thanks guy's, how long do you think the fuel pump repalcement should take(sounds like a pain in the butt). Any special tricks? I looked at the directions in the haynes manual. I could do it myself (did the engine) but Bogus said it was easy so maybee I will do it. Anymore imput would be great!!

Fuel pump replacement is one of the easiest R&R jobs on a C4; buy a new fuel pump & pickup screen and then:
-remove the fuel door & rubber boot
-unplug the connector on the left
-remove the three fuel lines, feed & return on right & vent to the left
-loop a piece of rubber tubing between feed & return to prevent "oozing"
-remove the ring of bolts around the mounting flange, using care to save all the O-rings
-carefully work the assembly loose and lift the assembly out of the tank
-drain any residual fuel, remove the fuel pump from the bottom
-install the new fuel pump & pickup screen
-clean the three contacts under the mounting flange
-install the assembly, hoses, connector, rubber boot and fuel door.

It has been suggested recently on this Forum that you should get some of the small O-rings and a new flange gasket from your local Chevy dealer though I was able to do the job by reusing old units.

If you have problems with the fuel level indicator, you might also clean the level sensor as also detailed on a recent post here.

Shortly after I took delivery of my Vette the fuel pump failed and the job took me about 1hr in the parking lot at work using shop tools.

Is that Haynes for a Corvette? You DO have to drop the tank for most in tank pump changes. I think I can change mine in a half hour. If your pokey, even a first timer shouldn't take over 2 hours. If you do, you're drinking too much beer. I have done mine at least 3 times and I still have the factory gasket. Good luck, and...

Did it last night and it was the easyest thing i've ever done. It took only an half an hour and 20 min. of that was adapting the universale pump too the sending unit. Was very relieved when the car fired right up when i was done. Thanks again
