I have to bring in my LCD cluster for repair because it had a current drain situation between D5 and D3. What I was wondering is this: when the upshift light comes on in my automatic car it only shows the arrow with the word "upshift" under it, bit I can also see the words "for best economy" under it but they are not lit. So what is correct?
Re: Upshift indicator in 1987 A4 LCD dash (fast not first)
I've had 3 C4's, all automatics one of them brand new. I have only noticed a "D" with a square around it on the dash or nothing in that spot at all. My current '87 is like that.
I have had the shifter panel off many times and even the entire console. Any dash shift indicator control would have to be in or around the shift mechanism not in the tranny, but I haven't noticed any specific device.
If you think it's that important, that's where I would look anyway.
Re: Upshift indicator in 1987 A4 LCD dash (fast not first)
My 87 with the 4+3 is the same way I see the arrow but the text is there but not very bright at all. Maybe too much area for a single bulb to light up.
Big Jim- The "D" with the square around it is for the overdrive portion of the manual 4+3 tranny. It only lights up when the overdrive is engaged. The upward arrow is supposed to work only on manual tranny cars when the ECM sends a signal to it. Not sure what the parameters are but something like throttle position, tranny not in OD and 4th gear, and possibly inches of vacuum in manifold. The A4-equipped cars don't use these lights, although I have read posts here about the upshift light operating on a few automatic-equipped cars but they weren't designed that way.
Re: Upshift indicator in 1987 A4 LCD dash (c4cruiser)
Big Jim, the arrow does work on A4s. Put the car in D not OD and cruise at 60 for a while it will come on after a couple of minutes, I had to ask about this in a post last winter. :chevy
Re: Upshift indicator in 1987 A4 LCD dash (Spankyellow)
:iagree: the upshift light is supposed to work on A4's. if you read the corvette black book for 86 i think...or whatever year that was added, it explains that it was added to automatics to help increase gas mileage

:iagree: Mine comes on whenever I am exceeding 2500 or so RPMS in anything but OD
