Here's a new one - I've recently replaced the power door lock buttons (worn through) and the relay (just because). The security system appears to work - use the power locks and the security light goes from flashing to steady and then with in 3 seconds after closing the door it goes off - stay in the car with this test and use the power door lock to unlock the car and the horns sound and starter is disabled. Use key in outside lock to reset and it does. Now for the strange problem - from time to time after unlocking the door with the key (drivers side and security was set) the power locks want to keep locking the doors - I finally noticed that when this is happening the security light is on steady (with door open) - Starter is not disabled when this is happening. I've tried all sorts of combinations to make it stop and eventually it will - but not sure as to what the magic is that makes it stop.
Any ideas on why this is happening? Could it be the exterior door lock tripping something up?

This is normal. The car "thinks" someone just broke the glass and reached in to hit the switch. The "security" light on my 86 goes off the instant the door closes and depresses the door switch mounted on the door sill, to the left of the hood release latch. Depressing it by hand causes the "security" light to off instantly.
The door lock cylinder has a rotating arm held to the lock cylinder by a scew, that rotates when the door key turns the key cylinder 90 degrees. It makes contact to ground and turns off the alarm.
