Apparently the wonderful Delco-Bose radio is draining the battery on my 93 Vette. I already bought a 10 disc CD player to take the place of the CD part of the radio that took a dump. Now it looks as though I will have to replace or fix the radio also.
Isn't there a place in Atlanta that takes your old radio/CDplayer and exchanges it for a good one? It think the cost was around $200?
It's either that or buy a cheapo radio/cassette deck, since I already have the afore mentioned CD deck.
P.S. It's already been established by an excellent Corvette mechanic that the radio is the culprit.
About 3 months ago, I bought a Delco/Bose radio/CD unit off of E-bay.. The guy said it was suppose to fit 92 to 96 Corvettes. Well I picked it up, and guess what? The mounting system was completely different. The guy that sold me the unit, told me about a stereo shot called Stereo One, and that they could modifiy it to fit. So I took it to these guys, left the car for an hour to go get breakfast. When I came back, the job was finished.....or so I thought. When I got in the car, the radio didn't work at all. So they rolled it back into the shop, removed it, fiddled around with the wiring and reinstalled it. Guess what...still didn't work. So they did the whole operation a third time, and this time the radio work..
Since then, the radio/CD works fine.....BUT.....it is draining my battery. It will take a full charged battery down in about 4 days, if the car isn't driven. I tried pulling the fuse on the radio...but it still drained it down. One day last week, I went into the garage, with the light off, and I saw something glowing inside the car. It was the back lighting for all the controls on the radio....apparently these lights stay on all the time. I was told that the multi pin connector provides several different power sources to the radio, which includes the memory and the backlighting. So something seems to be crossed up in there, I don't know if its the connector or something internal in the radio.
So....you might check your car in total darkness, with everything turned off, and see if your backlighting is staying on all the time. If you find out what the reason is for the lighting to stay on all the time...please share the information.... :yesnod:
I didn't check the lighting yet. I have the fuse out, but I've driven the car every day since I got it back, so it hasn't had a chance to drain down yet. I will look for the lights and let you know.
Have you explored the possibility that its the Bose amp relay(s) in the dash? In my previous '86 Vette, when I bought it second hand, it drained the battery in a couple of days. I think that's why the owner dumped it cheap. You could hear electrical popping sounds through the speakers even when it was off. I don't know if the late C4's have the same problem since my '95 is not Bose.
Concur with the Bose amp relay. My son's '87 drained the battery in about 4 days. Took a couple of hours with an amp meter and pulling fuses to figure out where the current drain was occuring. Turned out to be the relay!
