I have a ticking noise at 2000 RPM when driving. I think it is an exhaust leak but opinions are welcome. It ticks between 2000-3000 RPMs once the car warms up. If I let the car sit for 10-15 min. then start it again the noise will get very faint for a while (I suspect till the pipes heat up). when I do the turn the car off trick the oil temp is still at 215 and the water temp is still 200 (normal) when I restart it so I don't think it is a motor problem because the motor never gets a chance to cool down. any opinions on this one??? I will get under the car this weekend and see who's who in the zoo but would like a few ideas other then my own, don't want to here bad news, conclusions. The motor is quiet as a mouse, well a mouse with Magna Flow's at idel and below 2000 and I don't seem to hear it above 3000. It also seems to be more with light pedal rather then under heavy load.
Let me know about this one because what you describe is exactly the symptoms I am experiencing right now. I suspect its an exhaust leak. I just swapped cams and had a ticking sound from the passenger side. I had a loose rocker arm. Fixed that and now a slight ticking sound from the drivers side. I have TPIS headers that I put on about 2.5 years ago.
I have an 85 and I'll tell you what i ran into last week....
Car was makng ticking and banging noises to the point where I
was emabarrased to drive it. Anyhow, I had two rusted mufflers
which I promptly replaced. All the noise is gone now. Orginally,
I thought my cat was crappin out but turns out was ok. I even
misconstrued the noises for possible engine noises/issues.
Bottom line, when it comes to exhaust issues, noise travels
from one end to the other. Can play tricks on you... I would say
something is loose or worn out. Could be a pipe or a hanger..
Bad cat(s) or precat(s) - didn't check what year you drive before I posted (DOH). The substrate has broken up is rattling around in the exhaust flow at low rpms. Common on L98s, but can happen on LT1 as well.
