I know about the crossmember interference. But can I actually just slap on the flywheel from my car and put on the top end and call it good?
Or will I have problems with bolt patterns and such...sometimes too much information is too confusing! :crazy:

No! Based on the picture of the flexplate in the link you supplied, you have two significant differences. The flexplate picture is for a 1985-down block with a two piece rear main seal. Your 1986 is the first year using the one piece rear main seal. The bolt pattern on the crank flanges are different. Your flywheel won't bolt up. If it did, you'd have another problem. The picture of the flexplate shows the stock 400 imbalance, balancing weight. That engine is externally balanced. Yours is internally balanced. A stock, 400 flywheel will bolt to your new crank and be properly balanced, but it won't (168 teeth) fit into a Corvette bell housing. You are going to need a specialty (not stock for anything) aftermarket flywheel. The good news is that you'll be able to retain your stock starter.
For shopping purposes, you need a 153 tooth flywheel, for a two piece seal engine with a stock, 400 sbc (or 383 external) balance. Good luck, and...
