I was under the car today trying to locate a bad u-joint. I had the car in neutral and came across 3 things which didnt seem right
1. there is a quiet clicking sound coming from the area where the speedo gears are located when the wheels are spun
2. with the car in neutral, and a helper spinning a free wheels, there is a squeeling sound coming from the tranny. The sound seems to be coming from directly above the oil pan. The tranny was perfectly fine last season and has not been used since.
3. My helper was able to move the wheels with the car in drive.
If the engine is not running should be able to turn trans in all positions except park:
fluid coupling = no direct connection to engine as in manual car.
The clicking your heard was the governor clicking as you turned the wheel.
The squeeling should you heard is probably the seals rubbing against their sealing surface transmitting through the drivetrain.
Finally, unles the engine is running, you will beable to turn the rear wheels because an automatic transmission runs on hydraulic pressure and won't get any until the engine is running. so you'll be able to turn the wheel.
Only way to check the transmission, hope in it and drive it. If it drives fine and doesn't slip and fluid looks good.. Everything is fine.
