Hi,
I have a 1989 6-speed, and there is a clunkity clunkity noise from under the car which I believe is coming from the clutch or transmission. The noise is most apparent when the car is in neutral and not moving. When I press the clutch petdal the noise abates. Is this the throw out bearing? Is there any lube point for it? Can it be the transmission? How much should I expect for a new clutch repair? The car has 122K miles. How soon will it give out?
Thanks for any info.
Allan
The throw out bearing would tend to make noise when under load as in when you mash the clutch pedal. So I don't think that is what you ae hearing. I have read on the forum that the clutches in Vettes are noisy like you described. Hopefully someone with more knowlege on the subject will respond, but the noise may be normal.
Thanks for the info. I agree with what you say. The only thing the noise is new, and sometimes can be quite loud. I am more worried it is the transmission, or it could be the pilot bearing.
I have this same problem in my 92. In neutral with the clutch out is sounds like the biggest, clankety clank piece of crap! hahaha. Put the clutch in and all is quiet. Seems to operate fine. Shifts fine. I was thinking it was the throwout bearing myself. But unsure. I will be interested to see some responses................
So let's go forum 6 speed gurus.....anti up!!

Re: throw out bearing? (allangreen)
The ZF can be a noisy tranny when its working properly.
Clutch out and in neutral, power is going in to the trans, but not out.
Clutch in, netral or in gear, power is not even being sent into the trans, so nothings moving inside.
If its something that really bothers you, take it to a local Vette club or show and just ask someone who has owned 6spds if it sounds normal to them.
Alangreen;
What you're describing is likely a noisy transmission input shaft bearing. For starters, I'd check the ZF's fluid level. In fact, I'd change it (assuming it's not been done for a while).
It is very unlikely that it's a bad pilot bearing and is most definetly not a bad throwout bearing - since both would tend to make noise with the clutch in - not out.

The throwout bearing just went in the wife's Mustang. One day after the new clutch was installed!!! Needless to say, it was defective, but the whole car was shaking like a helicopter had landed on it's roof!!
I have the same sounds on my 92, and took it to the tranny place and described it to them and they suggested it was an input shaft bearing and that i should check if not change the gear lube and make sure it was full.
Hi,
Thanks all for your input. I spoke with Dick Guldstrand, who some of you may recognize as one of the Corvette greats. He has a shop in Burbank, CA, and when he was in Culver City, CA, much closer to me, his shop used to work on my car all the time.
His opinion was also that it is in the transmission. His suggestion was to start with a transmission flush and refill. I change the transmission oil every 25K miles, with high grade recommended grade oil. (GL-3 Castrol Formula RS Synthetic or GM Part # 1052931. I also remember some debate on what is the proper oil, and whether it should ever be changed.) I will bring the Vette to him for this work.
By the way, for your info, he told me it would cost about $2100 for a rebuild. They ship it back east to a specialty shop. Evidently they had bad luck with shops here in SoCal. That doesn't include another $400 to take the tranny out and hopefully, put it back in. Ouch!
Thanks all.
