To tell the truth, it will be a close call. IF you have a Z51 '85, I am pretty sure you can beat him, even if he has a cam and head work. The crossfire induction on the 84 is a performance killing combination. He'd be lucky to get into the low 14's even. If you say he smokes them up in 1st and goes sideways into 2nd, I tend to think he may have other mods he did not share with you. Just for example, i run low 12's, possibly 11's now with ym new tranny and shift kit, and even I don't go sideways in 2nd, unless my tires are cold (even though I do have very grippy DR's on the rear).

Best thing is to take it to the track, and have a fun day at it. If he refuses, he either has more mods, or just blowing steam up your pipe. :D

REALLY? What does 13.65 in the 1/4 with a 102mph sound like to you? Performance killing? And that's with street tires and a 3.07 rear. Having said that, I wouldn't say that the Xfire described above is a 13 sec car. But it doesn't take much to transform a Xfire into something to beat the crap out of a stock TPI car.

If he has done it right...You're toast!

I have none of his "goodies". Nor Dominic's either. I have a 160,000 mile long block that has never been opened. Stock (never off) heads, cam, intake (but ported), exhaust manifolds (never been off), gears (3.07's), computer, chip, fuel pump, etc. My best ET is 13.86. With his set up he should be faster than me. What kind of times have you run with your '85? Beware!

RACE ON!!!

Not to burst anyone's bubble here and not to start a crossfire vs tpi thing here, but to the people that are getting mid to high 13's out of their modified '84, ..... good job. MOST modified '84 crossfires won't get to the 'TPI' killing 13.6's you are getting. Most of them even modified are in teh 14's. Let's do the same mods to a TPI and you are easily in the 12's, but I was not talking about the few 13 second crossfires. A vette's a Vette, no matter how slow or fast it is. Heck I just recently got my car into the low 12's/11's. Do I go blatantly saying how EASY it is to beat up on a ZR1 or a C5?? No, as I think those other vette's rock and I can't wait to get one.

I just stated the FACT that the crossfire setup, even if pretty modified (which to me, cam/porting/maybe heads/no cats, full exhaust, etc. is) is lucky to get near the mid 13's.

I think that's what I meant by "The crossfire induction on the 84 is a performance killing combination."..

Sorry that I pointed out such an obvious design characteristic.

Agreed, the crossfire manifold isn't the best, but a stock TPI manifold isn't much better.
His friends car has an X-Ram, so the crossfire's biggest drawback has been removed. My crossfire runs 12's with an X-Ram.
It will be a close contest.

Here are the times a stock 84 and 85 would do

"1984 Chevrolet Corvette 6.7 15.1
1985 Chevrolet Corvette 5.7 14.1
"
so clearly the 85 is way ahead if their both stock so IMO with the mods he did he would be about even with you I can't see his 84 with those mods getting better than 14 flat hardly. If he's in mid 13's he has more mods than he told you.

Wildman,

I find that hard to believe when the rated HP for an 85 was about 30hp higher than the Xfire. Most TPI's9non-modded) I see running at the track are mid 14 cars.

MrNuke,

I think the point has been to bring the Xfire up to the level of more recent engine technology. For example, using a roller cam, aluminum heads, better breathing exhaust, all things latter TPI motors had. If the Xfire is the "cork" everybody thinks it is, changes made after the induction system shouldn't affect output all that much. And CFI's car attests to what a stock block CF can do without some of those upgrades. Those of us who have become intimately acquainted with CFI know that the manifold isn't necessarily the disaster everyone thinks it is. If GM would have cast the intake manifold ports at 2/3s the size of the head port, I suspect the TPI manifold would be a choker too.
Having 2 different size injectors at different pressures doesn't help in terms of optimum fuel distribution either. Some of us have had the obective of demonstrating that the fundamental design of the Xfire is not as flawed as others have made it out to be. In some respects, GM's execution of the design almost deliberately throttled the Xfire in order for GM to demonstrate that TPI technology was superior to CFI in terms of power production. No question GM had to move to TPI for emissions and fuel economy purposes, but TPI wasn't the quantum leap forward over CFI that its been made out to be. If anything, the difference is as much about how CFI was held down as it was about how TPI was better.

well I found those times at a 0 to 60 site I go by that seems to be pretty dead on the money but I kinda agree......14.1 is a little too good for a 85 I would think, I'm hearing people with like 88's getting around 14 flat.

that site also has my 95 listed at 5.2 and 13.7 this is with the 2.59 ratio though

Mine with the 3.07 g92 option is 4.95 and I personally know it does a 13.2 bc
I took er down to the track about a year ago and plan to go again soon and
it's stock :)

So, yanno sites like that just give us a ballpark range on what our cars do wasn't saying they can't do better or even if there capable of that bc u know how the net it

I ran a 15.19 @ 89.94 mph my first time at the track with street tires and my 84 is completely stock with 165,000 miles. Not bad for a 20 year old car.
With a pair of tires I'm sure I can break into the 14's and into the 90's.
Once I break that barrier I will open the hood!
