My 1992 with 95,000 miles has white smoke out the passenger side tailpipe. Smells like antifreeze. (bummer) Is it likely to be the headgasket or the intake manifold gasket? Is there an easy way to tell which it is? Any help getting my baby fixed would be greatly appreciated!
Yeah there are a couple of ways. The best diagnosis will be pulling the plugs on that side and inspecting them. One of them should be wet with anti-freeze. You are probably looking at a head gasket. Sorry, for the news. The good news is, It is not too bad of a repair. One Saturday and a case of beer and $50.00 worth of parts. Definately, pull both heads and re-work them while you have it down. It will save you $ in the long run. Good luck :seeya
I would take them to a qualified machinist that will resurface them, check for any potential problems like worn valve guides and valves etc. I would plan on replacing the valve seals at a minimum and let the machinist tell you what everything else looks like. They do several heads every day, whereas most folks only do a set every now and then (trust them). Most machine shops can give you a price over the phone to re-work your heads if they are in good shape. If you plan on improving performance, now would be the time to have the heads ported, polished to improve flow and HP. You are looking around 30 extra Hp if you do this. Fun, Fun, fun. I have no idea what other mods you have but, the heads would be ready when you go for the upgrade stuff. Good luck
