Default Reading Error Codes

I just bought my first corvette yesterday. Got a 85 w/ 74,000 miles it. Could not love it any more. I knew when I bought it that the check engine light came on when you were on the highway for a little while. I want to read the error code but have no idea even where to start. I work on computers for a living so I know I can figure it out once I get started. Just not sure the right steps to get started.

Thanks for the Help

Welcome to the Forum and congrats on your new Vette.

Here's how to pull codes:
-locate the ALDL under the left hush panel just right of the steering wheel and remove the plastic cover, if one exists
-insert the ends of a paper clip into pins A & B, upper right pair
-turn ignition On and cound the flashes of the SES light; first three "12s", followed by each error code three times, terminated by three "12s".
-turn the ingition Off, remove the paper clip and replace the ALDL cover
-bring any error codes back here.

Do I need to wait till I get the Service Engine light to check the code or Does the error code get stored in memory?

Whenever an error code is generated it is stored by the ECM in volatile memory unitl you remove battery power from the ECM.
