I think I know the answer but I'll ask anyway.
The previous owner of my car installed an aftermarket cam in it. Is there a way to figure the spec's without taking the engine apart. Don't want to know that bad. But would like a re-programed chip. Figured I'd have to have this information.
As always.....thanks Y'all... :seeya :flag
Not trying to be funny here....I would try contacting the previous owner. Assuming you don't know how.... You might get the info from Carfax or the State title bureau.
I guess it can be done. I've never done it, but if I did want to, here's what I'd do:
I'd pull the damper to give the clearance I'd need to bolt on a degree wheel and pointer.
I'd use a positive stop indicator in the #1 spark plug hole to find exact TDC of the #1 piston and align a pointer accordingly -the PSI could be a bent coat hangar with the tip sharpened to a point or a bolt on pointer., etc.
I'd use a dial indicator, and since the heads will be on, I'd need to align the dial indicator on the the #1 intake pushrod in such a way so as to eliminate parallex error.
All the spark plugs out and I'd need to manually turn the engine in the normal running direction and write down the various degree wheel and dial indicator readings at different intervals/degrees of crank rotation/tappet lift.
I could use the .006 tappet lift, the .050 tappet lift and the max valve lift readings to compare to cams listed in the various catalogs. I should be able to find one that matches, unless the cam is a custom grind. At least, though, I'd have a ballpark.
Just depends on how badly I'd want to know to justify going through all that.
Thanks Guys. The previous owner doesn't remember and the company that did the work for him is out of business  . Not worth all that trouble, nothing is ever simple. Oh well, she runs like a bat out a &$$# that's all that really matters. Hope to put it on the dyno in a couple of weeks. $75.00 for hook up and two pull's. Sounds reasonable I guess, and it's local.

did the previous owner have the chip custom tuned? since your vette is MAF, he may not have. your desire to get a further tune by doing would no doubt reap some benefits. i can see where you would be frustarted by not knowing the cam specs. kinda strange that the previous owner doesn't know.
by the way, i do like the looks of those wheels on your ride
