Default Correct Idle When Setting Timing?

I just finished putting everything together after replacing the intake gaskets on my 89 L98 automatic. Car started but idled poorly, which I expected because of the distributor removal. When I connected my timing light (after disconnecting the tan wire) I turned the distributor clockwise quite a bit to get 6 degrees BTDC and the idle shot up to 1400, stays there for 10 seconds and drops down to 900 and then goes back up again. While at 900 the timing is about 0 degrees. What do I do from here to get a smooth idle along with the correct timing? I cleaned the throttle body blades but did nothing to the IAC. I'll take it out for a quick run after rush hour traffic tonight.

Did you disconnect that ESC wire when setting the timing?

Nevermind, you did :)

It sounds like you may have a vacuum leak but cleaning the IAC and resetting base idle isn't a bad idea.
