what speed should downshift to first occur?
Sometimes (and sometimes only) I can expect to see first gear when I tromp on it from third at 30 m.p.h. Should I be able to do this consistently and at speeds above 30? :D

I think it matters what gears you have.
Certainly if I floor mine at 30mph it won't go into 1st as I have 3:45's and would be high in teh rpms, but before when I had 3.07's I could floor it around 27mph and get into 1st by itself..
