Default Runs like a slug

Just got my 85 383 back together after tearing it down to have it rebalanced. Before I tore it down the 315's would break loose at about 2500 rpm in first and second gear. Now it won't get out of it's own way and will only rev to about 4200 rpm. I've rechecked timing so far and it is 6*. It acts like it is running retarded. Would it run at all if it were one tooth off on the cam gear? I'm pretty sure I got the timing marks right but at my age stuff happens. Any suggestions are appreciated.

First I would double check the plug wires and that the Dist. is correct. Several years ago I put a 350 together and the bottom gear timing gear had several setting on it. I mistakly lined the wrong marks up, the car ran but not good. Also I would check the vacum lines. I am sure you will find the trouble.

Yes it will run if the timing set if off a tooth. I manged to put my LT1 together this way once, suddenly my 12 second car couldn't get out of the 14's. On the LT1 it's double trouble though because the distributor is timed off of the cam. If the cam timing is off, so is igntion timing by default.
