Bypassing Reverse Gear Key Removal Lockout
[Modified by skybolt31, 3:41 PM 5/24/2004]

I'd think you first need to pull the shifter **** off and remove the console trim. I think it's cable actuated in there somewhere. But I really have no idea :blueangel: , so TTT.
The cable running from the shifter to the steering column needs to be disconnected and the column plunger (on my car, anyway; others have responded differently) needs to be locked in the "in" position. This plunger is inside the column behind where the steering wheel mounts.
If you follow the cable to the column, and play with it a little, you'll see what needs to be done. Thin fingers helps...So does being nearsighted...
Others have said their plunger pops right out. Mine didn't. If you just disconnect the cable and leave the plunger in place, it will lock *all* the time. I made up a kind of "Z" shaped rod [1/8" dia x 5" long] to hold the plunger in, and fastened it to one of the column mounting bolts.
Yes, you need to disassemble the console to get at the cable. Long process, involving removing the console lid, **** & shifter cover, radio fascia, drivers dash surround, and some other odds & ends, like the plastic kick panel with the light in it under the dash...
Lots of fun.

to remove the shift boot, you need to remove the console trim.
to remove the console trim, you need to remove the dash bezel.
to remove the dash bezel, you need to remove the instrument panel bezel.
to remove that, you need to pull the headlight **** and the tilt lever.
the hand bones are connected to the ankle bones... :banghead:
