Default 84CFI; think i FINALLY found the problem

since i took my car out a few months ago, its just been running worse and worse all the time, ive put in new plugs, new fuel injectors, stuck the thermac flaps open, but it just kept getting worse, skipping and wantin to stall. today i took off the distributor cap, and saw that the there was about 15-20 deg free play in the rotor! i found TDC and took out the distributor, the drive gear was destroyed. the teeth were bent and all chipped away at the ends. im amazed the engine even started at all, with the rotor moving ahead and back, plus i think it jumped a tooth or two. anyway i ordered a new gear from napa, hopefully that does the trick. :D

I'd be concerned about what the cam gear looks like and where all those pieces of metal went to.

:iagree:

with the dissy out, you can see the cam gear with a flashlight.
it would be worth having a look and turning the motor over by hand twice while you inspect it.
